Portraits Defined

A picture that not just shows the person but tells something about that person.

His father had always passed on the idea that your hard work will get you not only what you need, but what you want. Staring off into the distance, he thought of his life; his past, his might to be future, what he did to deserve to be selling shoes just to be scraping by; wondering why he didn't have what he needed, or what he wanted. He thought that losing his job was the worst thing that could happen to him. But now even that seems like nothing. He wished she'd come back, wished she see that he could provide for her with his hard work, with how much he loved her. Or just the plain fact he'd rather die than see her not provided for; because ever since he saw her in that flowered dress when he was 14, he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Yet, he's still alive; and she isn't there.
